What is a Small Group?
Both Small Groups and Sunday services are vital to St Hilary's & St Silas Church. They are like the two wings of a bird. A bird needs both to fly. A Christian needs both to flourish. Small groups are the primary means of caring for one another, the best way to welcome new people, and grow us in our faith.
Our groups are made up of between 3-15 people who meet at least twice a month, at church, home or work. Most groups are linked to a specific Shac congregation.
Each group seeks to fulfil these 5 values
- Love - grow in our love for God and each other and express that in prayer and action.
- Learn - read and apply the Bible to our lives and learn from one another.
- Serve - work as a team to serve the church and community, encourage each other to use and develop our gifts for God.
- Reach - welcome new people into the group, pray for others to know Jesus, seek and pray for ways to share our faith.
- Multiply - grow numerically and birth a new group and new leader.
There are some specialised small groups, such as groups for children (DGs), for youth and young adults (LCs), single sex groups, and Investigating Christianity groups or Alpha small groups.
Most groups might:
- meet for about 2-3 hours weekly
- include a meal or supper, and a time of worship
- pray for one another
- bible study and discussion
- go on a weekend away
- help out at a church working bee
Being a member of a small group means:
- attending your group and St Hilary's & St Silas Church regularly
- helping to fulfill the values of small groups
- and working with others in the great task of learning the good news of Jesus and sharing it with others.
